Project Strive
To our non-corporate donors – Thank you for the life-changing support your donations offer to clients of the Daily Planet! Project Strive is a highly successful education and employment training program provided by the Daily Planet in collaboration with the University of Richmond and the private business community. The goal of Project Strive is to empower homeless individuals so they may successfully obtain education, job training and employment. To date, 88 percent of the participants who have entered the program have graduated and are on the path to leading productive, sustainable lifestyles. This original concept was created at the Daily Planet and was expanded upon through a partnership with the University of Richmond as an alternative to day labor pools that most homeless see as their only means to employment. The program is divided into three components Educational Services, Job Training/Internship and Job Placement. Educational Services Educational services include academic and vocational assessment and training, GED preparation and testing, basic skill enhancement, vocational training and basic computer literacy training. Workshops and job training are designed to complement classroom instruction and stress the value of learning as well as preparing for employment. Job Training & Internship The job training component offers transitional employment and/or on-the-job training. This is a paid work experience in a non-profit organization, which allows individuals to develop their work skills while having time to pursue their educational goals. Job readiness training provides training in job search techniques, resume writing, interviewing, work ethics, dressing for success, etc. Job search assistance offers job placement contacts and information about other employers and jobs. Workshops and a 12-week paid internship are designed to offer practical, hands-on work experience and information in a structured work environment. Job Placement Through affiliations with the private business community and a personnel agency, graduates of Project Strive are placed in positive work environments. A job developer assists in their placement and maintains a structured follow-up to insure success for the client. |
