The Daily Planet’s Mental Health Clinic provides services to people in the community who are unable to access mental health services elsewhere. It is designed to address the mental health needs of the homeless, unemployed, and under-employed population who are often least likely to be able to access quality treatment due to limited community or personal resources. Psychiatric and Clinical Social Work staff provide a variety of mental health services such as mental health assessments; individual, group, and child/family therapy; medication management; psychiatric evaluations; pharmacotherapy; prescriptions; education and consultation; and collaborative services with other Daily Planet and community programs. The mental health program has grown consistently in recent years to meet an increased need. It is staffed by two highly qualified part-time Psychiatrists, two part-time Family Nurse Practitioners, and five Clinicians (Masters level therapists). Treatment needs range from those patients with mild levels of anxiety and interpersonal problems to those with serious mental/emotional illnesses such as Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and Schizophrenia. To access services people are asked to come to the Daily Planet weekdays between 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. at which time they will be screened for case management needs and, if possible (we can only take three per day), be registered and evaluated for mental health services. Patients are seen by clinical social work staff in the order that they sign in and are given the opportunity to explore their treatment needs in a confidential setting. Psychiatric evaluations and/or therapy can usually commence within a few days if indicated.
