As a nonprofit charitable organization, The Daily Planet relies heavily on the compassion and generosity of the community. If you are interested in volunteering please click here to access our online volunteer application.
Another way to get involved is to hold a needs drive/collection. To view current needs list, click here. For more information, please call 804-783-2505, ext. 241 to learn about specific items needed at the time of your scheduled drive.
Please note that our volunteer positions do not include shadowing a healthcare provider.
As a Community Healthcare Center, we are unable to utilize healthcare providers as volunteers.
**Effective January 1, 2012, all new volunteers will have to go through a criminal background check before starting.**
Our Breaking Bread program involves groups of 4 to 12 people to provide meals for the residents living at our Medical Respite and Safe Haven programs. Groups (churches, book clubs, businesses, schools, and families) purchase food, prepare meals and then bring it to the facility to serve to the residents staying in one of these programs.
The average meal costs between $100 and $125 depending on what you choose to serve. Menu examples include baked chicken, meatloaf, tacos or BBQ; a side dish (vegetable); bread; and a small dessert. It is our hope you will bring enough food for your group to eat with the residents. Feel free to stay and visit for up to an hour. This volunteer program is not just about feeding the body, it’s also about feeding the spirit through fellowship and conversation.
For more information or to get on the serving calendar, please first look over our calendars. Once you have an idea of when you might like to serve, please email Susan Sekerke or call 804-934-1824.
